Superficial and deep reflexes in spinal cord injuries

Abstract
Eleven patients with anatomically complete lesions, 22 with physiologically complete lesions, and 15 with physiologically incomplete lesions were studied. Superficial abdominal reflexes were sought to the scratch of a dull pin and to cold produced by ether. The cremasteric reflex was also tested by the scratch and cold stimuli. Iliac, costal, pubic, and rectus abdominus reflexes of the abdominal wall were also studied. Superficial abdominal reflexes in anatomically complete, physiologically complete, and physiologically incomplete lesions were present in 54.5, 51.1, and 45% of tested quadrants, respectively. Scratch was the better stimulus. Cold elicited cremasteric reflexes in 68% of anatomical lesions. Scratch produced better responses than cold in the 2 physiological lesion groups. Deep muscle reflexes of the abdominal wall were found in a fair percentage of cases.
