Abstract
Summary: The interpretation of the record of the rocks current fifty years ago has been modified as a result of new evidence and the realization of the immensity of geological time. There is as yet no good reason to doubt that conditions under which the rocks available for examination were formed have remained the same throughout geological time. The hypothesis of a world-wide rhythm in the intensity of crustal movement remains unproved. On present evidence, Lyellian uniformitarianism is applicable to the whole of geological history.
