Studies in Adherence of Contrast Media to Mucosal Surfaces

Abstract
An attempt was made to measure the physical properties of 12 commercial preparations of barium sulfate suspension and correlate them with their capacity to coat strips of dog colon. Comparisons between density, viscosity, particle charge and coating of mucosa were difficult to make because the various added surfactants and their effects on the barium particles could not be ascertained. In general, the coat is too thin at low viscosities while at high viscosities the preparation is too viscid for use. At low densities, the coating is insufficient and at high densities of no practical value.
