Aneurysms of the Splenic Artery

Abstract
In instances of double rupture there is often a delay of up to 48 hr. before the 2nd rupture occurs. If the correct diagnosis can be made during this period a significant increase in survivors will result. Rupture of the aneurysm carries a mortality rate of 775% and in some series almost 100%. The inordinately high mortality rate reported with rupture should lead the clinician to consider surgical intervention when aneurysm of the splenic artery is diagnosed. Patients who are poor surgical risks may be treated expectantly or simple proximal and distal ligation of the artery may be considered. The obstetrician should be aware of this entity and bear in mind that sudden hemorrhagic shock in a gravid patient may be extrauterine.
