Abstract
Pea (Pisum sativum) seedlings were germinated and grown in darkness for 5 d whilst being subjected to continuous accelerations of between 1 × g and 1054 × g. Increased acceleration retarded the elongation of both epicotyls and roots, and inhibited lateral root growth. Changes in the cell wall carbohydrate and lignin components were also recognized. Nevertheless, increasing acceleration from 1 × g to 1054 × g had no effect on germination and peas were able to germinate and grow successfully at up to approximately 10 000 × g.
