Left atrial C wave and mitral leaflet size

Abstract
The left atrial c wave (LAC) results from billowing of the mitral leaflets into the left atrial cavity shortly after the onset of left ventricular contraction. After increasing the size of the anterior mitral leaflet in five baboons by the insertion of a fascia lata patch, the amplitude of LAC was increased and its peak delayed. Since the mitral component of the first heart sound (M1 is known to coincide with the peak of LAC, this study confirms that the size of the mitral leaflets is an important factor in determining not only the amplitude of LAC but also the timing of M1.
