THE NATURE AND MECHANISM OF SHOCK PRODUCED BY THE INTRAVENOUS INJECTION OF CHYMOTRYPSIN

Abstract
The effect of intraven. injns. of chymotrypsin into dogs was studied. Chymotrypsin brought about proteolysis of fibrinogen and prothrombin in the circulating blood, thereby prolonging the clotting time. The lethal dose of chymotrypsin was found to be between 40 and 60 mg./kg. of body wt. A prolonged depression of the blood pressure was observed with intraven. injns. of from 40-50 mg./kg. The immediate and transient effect on the blood pressure of from 3-25 mg. of chymotrypsin/kg. was much less pronounced than ihe effect of comparable amts. of trypsin. Pathologic changes in the liver, kidneys, and adrenals were observed after intraven. injn. of large doses of chymotrypsin.
