Social support for disaster workers after a mass-casualty disaster: Effects on the support provider

Abstract
Spouses and significant others (SSOs) are a major part of the social support systems of disaster/rescue workers, yet little is known about this group or the effects of providing support in disaster situations. In this preliminary study, we examine the effects on the SSOs of support they provided to mortuary workers following a mass-casualty Naval disaster. Providing support for those involved in mass-casualty body handling appears to be a critical, yet somewhat stressful role. Knowledge about support provision can be used to plan interventions for both support providers and disaster workers.
