Abstract
FOLLOWING ATTEMPTS TO INTERRUPT AMYGDALOFUGAL PATHWAYS IN THE AREA OF ANSA LENTICULARIS WITHOUT DAMAGE TO AMYGDALOID NUCLEI OR OTHER FIBER SYSTEMS CONNECTING AMYGDALA WITH MEDIAL TELENCEPHALIC AND DIENCEPHALIC REGIONS, CATS WERE TRAINED IN A SHUTTLE SHOCK AVOIDANCE PROBLEM PAIRING MILD GRID SHOCK WITH FLICKERING LIGHT OR PURE TONE. DAMAGE NARROWLY CONFINED TO THE TARGET FIBER SYSTEM IMPAIRED AVOIDANCE ACQUISITION TO THE PHOTIC SIGNAL ONLY; EARLY STAGES OF TRAINING BELOW 50% AVOIDANCE WERE MOST AFFECTED. PRIMARY MOTOR OR SENSORY HANDICAPS WERE NOT A FACTOR. SUCH LESIONS DID NOT IMPAIR RETENTION OF PREOPERATIVELY LEARNED AVOIDANCE RESPONSES TO LIGHT.
