Decreased Glucose Tolerance in Chronic Alcoholics after Alcohol Ingestion when Fed a Carbohydrate Poor Diet

Abstract
Six chronic alcoholics were given alcohol with a carbohydrate poor diet for one week. During the following week, when on a normal hospital diet, fasting glucose and glucose tolerance, including insulin determinations, were investigated. For comparison the same determinations were performed after one week's carbohydrate poor diet without alcohol addition. The results imply that addition of alcohol to a carbohydrate poor diet might accentuate a decrease in the glucose tolerance. 1 This work was supported by the Swedish Medical Research Council (Project B 73-19 X-814-07).
