Abstract
Resection of the colon and rectum may produce both transient and permanent alterations in colonic function. Furthermore, the nature of some operative techniques may result in autonomic denervation of the rectum and associated pelvic viscera. An understanding of the mechanism of injury and the subsequent functional abnormalities is necessary to provide adequate therapy. Keywords
