Abstract
The study was designed to compare the penetration of cefadroxil and penicillin G (PcG) into infected and uninfected tissue cages in rabbits. Tissue cages were implanted subcutaneously in rabbits and inoculated with 105 cfu group A streptococci. Two days later twice-daily injections of the drugs were given (10 mg/kg). The concentration in serum and cage fluid was monitored. The levels of PcG in the infected cages were substantially lower than those of the controls reaching on the average 2·1 and 38% respectively of the serum peak. The cefadroxil-treated rabbits showed insignificant differences between the infected and uninfected cages and a substantially higher ratio cage fluid/serum peak levels (23·8 and 20·8% respectively). Drug levels in cage fluids above the MIC were found for both drugs for 8 h following the first injection. Keywords
