Observations of Buoyant Plumes in Calm Stably Stratified Air

Abstract
Buoyant plumes, in a stably stratified environment, have a definite height limit. This was studied in the calm stably stratified air of an ice skating rink by using model and schileren techniques. Observed plume heights were found to be 2 per cent greater than those predicted by Priestley and Ball (1955) and 20 per cent greater than those predicted by Morton, Taylor and Turner (1956).
