Abstract
Dense corundum-rutile composites containing plate-shaped corundum particles were prepared from the CVD Al2O3-TiO2 powders by adding a small amount of sodium and sintering below ˜1280°C. The fracture toughness increased up to 6.5 Mpa · ✓m and the increment of toughness was proportional to the volume % of plate-shaped corundum particles. The importance of tilt deflection and crack bowing rather than the twist deflection was suggested in this system. Keywords
