Diagnosis of Aortic Atresia by Retrograde Aortography

Abstract
In congenital atresia of the aortic valve the right ventricle functions as a single ventricle. Its output is distributed from the pulmonary trunk into the pulmonary arteries and through a potential ductus arteriosus into the aorta. From this source blood flows in retrograde fashion through the aortic arch and the ascending aorta. The latter is hypoplastic. Demonstration by retrograde aortography that the ascending aorta is hypoplastic and supplies the coronary arteries is strongly suggestive of aortic valvular atresia.
