Adrenal Cortical Function in “Obesity with Pink Striae” in the Young Adult

Abstract
The metabolism of cortisol in 6 young obese individuals with “pink striae” has been investigated. There is a small increase in the secretion rate of cortisol, which is in agreement with previous suggestions of others that there is some increase of adrenal cortical activity in obese subjects. The measurement of other indices of cortisol metabolism (urinary 17-ketosteroids and 17-ketogenic steroids, urinary and plasma cortisol, response to ACTH and suppression with dexamethasone) enables a distinction to be drawn between the findings in this group of patients and in those with Cushing's syndrome.
