Abstract
Evidence on organizational hierarchy is reviewed and employed in the formulation of hypothesized relations between level in the managerial hierarchy and compensation judged appropriate for managerial levels. The evidence suggests a proportional distance between compensation levels associated with adjacent hierarchical levels. Organizational hierarchy appears to connote differences in worth of positions independent of other characteristics of the positions. Keywords
