Abstract
Growth factor requirements of 6 spp. of halophilic bacteria (Vibrio sp., Micrococcus halodenitrificans, Sarcina sp., Sarcina littoralis, Pseudomonas salinaria and Pseudomonas cutirubra), ranging in opt. NaCl concn. from 4% to 25% and representing both colorless and red forms, were detd. in a basal medium of vit.-free casamino acids, inorg. salts, citrate and succinate. No consistent pattern of growth factor requirements with varying NaCl optima was noted. Vibrio sp. grew well in the basal medium, whereas M. halodenitrificans required thiamine and Sarcina sp. required thiamine, nicotinic acid and pantothenic acid. Purines and pyrimidines stimulated these colorless organisms in varying degree. For the 3 red halophiles, growth factors were not essential though growth was stimulated by yeast extract, as effect partly attributable to its ash equivalent and not replaceable by combinations of growth factors. P. cutirubra was favored somewhat by desoxyribonucleic acid. Keywords
