Meperidine in Patient-Controlled Analgesia

Abstract
Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) is a method commonly used for postoperative analgesia (1− 3). It is a safe technique with few reports of severe respiratory depression. A near-fatal respiratory arrest is reported in a patient who went into acute renal failure while receiving meperidine via PCA. A massively elevated blood concentration of normeperidine, the renally excreted toxic metabolite of meperidine, was documented.
