Abstract
A. solani, when grown on a variety of defined culture media containing high concns. of sucrose, produces alternaric acid in proportion on the amt. of mycelium formed. With some fungi alternaric acid prevents spore germination. In others it markedly retards the extension of the germ-tubes. It is not antibacterial. The acid is isolated by extracting culture filtrates with chloroform at pH 3.5, followed by recrystallization from benzene. Keywords
