Abstract
Appreciation of the essential distinction between internal and external methods of analysis is a fundamental component of the Fry paradigm. Investigation of the emergent behaviors of systems, observed at several hierarchical levels of ecological organization, is emphasized in his work. Internal analysis is always preceded by observation of the relevant external variables. The value of this approach is clear when assessed in terms of recent developments in systems theory. Keywords
