Abstract
Increasing 1000-seed weight, both between and within seed lots of Grasslands Moata' tetraploid Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), increased seedling growth, emergence at 5 and 10°C, and vigour. When seed lots with 1000-seed weights of 3.2, 4.0, and 5.0 g respectively were sown at 15 kg ha-1, no significant differences in dry matter production were recorded, because the greater number of plants m-2 from the small seed lot compensated for reduced individual plant performance. When the same number of seeds (375 nr-2) were sown for all three seed lots, dry matter production from the large seed was 32–42% greater than that from the small seeds through the winter and early spring. No differences in seed yield or yield components were recorded. Keywords
