Interactions of the Oral Microbiota I. A System for the Defined Study of Mixed Cultures.

Abstract
A model system for measurement of interactions between 2 or more cultures of microorganisms is described. Essentially the system involves 2 or more chemostats of pure culture feeding to a common nonlimited growth cell. Both mixed and pure cultures are fed in continuous fashion and reach a steady state. The growth kinetics are defined mathematically and data expressed in generation time. Results obtained with mixtures of Streptococcus salivarius and Veillonella alcalescens indicate definite but subtle interactions between these organisms. Generation time of both species was noticeably increased under these conditions.
