Abstract
Paloyan and Lawrence published an article in the January Archives entitled, "Thyroid Neoplasms After Radiation Therapy for Adolescent Acne Vulgaris" (114:53-55, 1978). The article was comparatively conservative; for instance, the "Comment" was started with, "The association of thyroid neoplasia and a previous history of radiation exposure for the treatment of acne vulgaris may be purely coincidental...." On the other hand, apparently the American Medical Association issued a press release that led to such headlines as, "Twelve out of Twenty Patients Treated for Acne With X-rays Develop Thyroid Cancer." I have received an unprecedented number of phone calls from newspapers, television networks, and distressed dermatologists, the latter pleading with me to "do something about it."
