Abstract
A technique is presented whereby certain mathematical models for the vortex shedding induced response of a rigid elastically supported cylindrical element can be applied to internally elastic structural elements such as beams, cables, etc. The formulation is used to generate an analytic relationship which predicts the maximum amplitude of response of a variety of elastic elements. The analytic results are compared with experimental observations using a particular vortex shedding model.
