Abstract
Recently Rao (1984, Sankhya, The Indian Journal of Statistics, Series A 44, 1-22) and Rao and Nyak (1985, IEEE Transaction on Information Theory IT-31, 589-593) have developed a general decomposition of diversity in much the same way as variance is decomposed in analysis of variance. The number of species shared between samples from two populations fits naturally into this theory. Thus, it is possible to partition the variation in species shared. In an example, the variability in species shared in deep sea benthic samples in partitioned into factors of season and year.
