Abstract
Total cross sections for electron impact excitation of the lowest lying autoionizing levels in alkali metal atoms have been calculated in the first Born approximation, modified first Born approximation and Vainshtein approximation (neglecting exchange). The radial wavefunction for the (n-1) p orbital (n=4,5,6) for K, Rb and Cs respectively has been approximated by the analytical functions tabulated by Clementi (1965) whereas for the ns orbital two types of approximate functions, one given by Clementi (1965) and the other by Remy (1973 private communication), have been used. The calculated contributions for autoionization are of the same order of magnitude as those observed for K, Rb and Cs by Nygaard and Hahn (see abstr. A38232 of 1974).Keywords
