Abstract
SUMMARY: Twelve albino children with IQs in the normal range were psychometrically assessed and compared to a control group of equally visually handicapped children who were non‐albino. A striking and consistent pattern of cognitive functioning emerged in the albino group (a large verbal/performance discrepancy in favour of verbal skills) which could not be attributed to their poor visual acuity. This unusual pattern of intellectual functioning may be related to the unique neuroanatomy and neurophysiology recently demonstrated in people with albinism.RESUME: Fonctions cognitives chez les enfants albinosDouze enfants albinos avec des QI normaux ont subi des examens psychométriques et ont été comparés à un groupe contröle ďenfants non albinos également handicapés sur le plan visuel. Une forme frappante et régulière de fonctionnement cognitif a émergé du groupe albinos (dissociation verbal/performance très importante en faveur du verbal) qui ne pouvait être attribuée à la faible acuité visuelle. Ce type inhabituel de fonctionnement intellectuel peut être rapproché de la neuroanatomie et neurophysiologie particulières, dont ľexistence a été récemment démontrée chez les albinos.ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Cognitive Leistungen von Albino Kindern12 Albinos mit normalen IQs wurden psychometrisch beurteilt und mit einer Kontrollgruppe von entsprechend visuell behinderten nicht Albino Kindern verglichen. In der Albinogruppe fand sich ein auffallendes, gleichbleibendes Muster der cognitiven Leistungen (große Diskrepanz zwischen verbalen und praktischen Leitsungen zugunsten der verbalen Fähigkeiten), das nicht ihere eingeschränkten Sehschärfe zugeschrieben werden kann. Dieses ungewöhnliche Muster intellektueller Fähgkeiten kann eine Relation zu der ungewöhnlichen Neuroanatomie und Neurophysiologie haben, die kürzlich bei Personen mit Albinismus nachgewiesen wurden.RESUMEN: Funcionamiento cognitivo en niños albinosDoce niños albinos con un CI dentro de la normalidad fueron evaluados psícométricamente y comparados con un grupo control formado por niños con dificultad visual y no albinos. En el grupo albino emergió un tipo extraño y consistente de función cognitiva (una gran discrepancia verbal/manipulacion en favor de la habilidad verbal) que no podia ser atribuido a su pobreza visual. Esta forma inusual de functionamiento intelectual puede estar en relación con los datos neuroanatómicos y neurofisiológicos demostrados recientemente en individuos con albinismo.
