Abstract
To be of value as an epidemiological tool, the procedure for staphylococcal phage typing must be rigidly standardized. The phages must be carefully checked after propagation to ascertain that neither they nor their host staphylococci have undergone spontaneous changes which would affect the lytic spectra. During routine typing, the potency of the phages must be re-tested weekly. Results of phage typing must be interpreted according to certain accepted criteria. The methods described are those now recommended by the Subcommittee on Phage Typing of the International Association of Microbiological Societies.
