Mescalin and Depersonalization: Therapeutic Experiments

Abstract
The authors studied the effect of administering small doses (0.1 to 0.2 gm.) of mescalin (synthetic) by mouth to 11 psychotic patients. The drug is capable of inducing a state of depersonalization ("a subjective condition in which the patient feels that he is no longer himself"), of derealization (a state in which the environment seems unreal or altered) and hallucinations similar to those present in such morbid states as schizophrenia. It may also temporarily improve the symptoms of derealization in such morbid states.
