Abstract
To the Editor:— In the QUESTION AND ANSWER section (205:193, 1968) David Dahlin, MD, responded to a question by Leonard Wachs, MD, regarding a possible osteochondroma of the patella. Dr. Dahlin quoted Jaffe's statement that "cartilage-capped exostoses develop only in relation to bones preformed in cartilage." Dr. Dahlin then stated that "the patella is not in this category" and implies that for this reason the lesion in question was not an osteochondroma. There is a cartilaginous precursor of the patella. Standard anatomy texts indicate that the cartilaginous precursor is formed during the third intra-uterine month and usually ossifies by about the third year of life.1-3 Jaffe also states that the enchondroma occurs only in bones preformed in cartilage.4Linscheid and Dahlin reported a "chondroma" (enchondroma) of the patella in 1966.5 Possibly osteochondromata do not occur on the patella but certainly not for the reason given byKeywords
