Abstract
This case report presents the 1st known preoperative diagnosis of duodenal lymphosarcoma by the cytologic method. Clinical examination of the patient suggested the possibility of a lower duodenal lesion. The smear of duodenal aspirate showed a varied lymphoid spectrum with typical malignant cells distr. singly containing large nuclei and nucleoli, increased chromatin, prominent nuclear membranes, and scanty cytoplasm. The pathologic diagnosis was confirmed by biopsy at laparotomy. Duodenal cytologic technique necessitates meticulous prepn. of the patient to insure a clean bowel. The duodenal tube is checked by fluoro. scopy. Biliary and pancreatic secretions are secured by stimulants. Rapid fixation of the aspirate is necessary. A modified Papanicolaou stain is used. Keywords
