Abstract
Recent experimental data which indicate breakdown of the one-electron model for bands of transition and noble metals at energies 5-10 eV below the Fermi energy are discussed in terms of many-body resonances. It is shown that although no satisfactory quantitative theory is available at present, one can make considerable progress in understanding the electronic structure of these metals in qualitative terms. Possible consequences of the resonances are discussed, and predictions are made for the strength of resonance behavior in Pd and Pt.
