THE NATURE OF THE NEGRI BODY

Abstract
Brains of baby mice infected with the street rabies virus which has a high capability for producing Negri bodies were examined in order to clarify the origin of this cytoplasmic inclusion. Consecutive thick and thin sections were prepared from Ammon''s horns embedded in Epon so that the same Negri bodies could be observed by light and electron microscopy. The morphological evidences show that the Negri body is not a degenerative structure formed from cellular constituents but is the characteristic matrix which is related with the virus replication. The so-called inner body is composed of clumps of virus particles associated with some amount of cellular constituents.
