Choroidal Melanoma-Reply

Abstract
In Reply. —We have read the letter by Drs McLean, Foster, and Zimmerman with amazement. We are sad that the discussion concerning the management of uveal melanoma has come to this level. We have considered seriously confining our reply to a few sentences, but feared that our restraint would be interpreted as lack of an answer to McLean et al. It should be realized that our article was written as a reaction against an article published by Zimmerman et al in 19781 in which these authors concluded that "approximately two-thirds of the fatalities could be attributed to the dissemination of tumour emboli at the time of enucleation" and that "new techniques for enucleation designed to prevent the dissemination of tumour cells must be developed and tested to enable the ophthalmic surgeon to remove safely the tumour containing eye that has developed such complications as uncontrollable glaucoma, panophthalmitis, or proptosis
