Abstract
Fever is associated with cell injury and liberation of toxic pyrogens. Necrosin which has proteolytic activity and a nitrogenous substance termed pyrexin are found in the euglobulin fraction of inflammatory exudates. The euglobulin fraction alone is pyrogenic in dogs. Inj. of such exudates into the marginal ear vein of rabbits increases the rectal temp. on the avg. 2.37[degree] F. in 1-2 hrs. Purified necrosin is essentially non-pyrogenic. The true pyrogenic factor in the euglobulin fraction of exudates is "pyrexin." This substance is thermostable, and unlike necrosin is harmless to mice. It may be an enzymatic product of necrosin acting on a euglobulin substrate. Its exact chemical nature is still uncertain.
