Safety of Trivalent Inactivated Influenza Vaccine in Children 6 to 23 Months Old

Abstract
Influenza is a leading vaccine-preventable cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Children younger than 2 years experience higher morbidity from influenza than any other age group except individuals older than 65 years.1-4 Although the case-fatality rate in young children with influenza is not as high as in the elderly, hospitalization rates from severe illness are as high as 3 per 1000 children 6 to 23 months old and as high as 9 per 1000 children younger than 6 months.5 Furthermore, among young children with influenza, outpatient visits to a clinic or emergency department (ED) are 10 to 250 times as common as hospitalizations.6
