Abstract
In the study of physical work a multiplicity of methods have been used to measure exertion and fatigue at the perceptual level. In recent years, however, the assessment of perceived exertion and subjective fatigue during physical work has relied almost exclusively on four psychophysical measurement techniques: (i) ratio scaling, (ii) category scaling, (iii) rating scales and (iv) acceptability scaling. This paper provides a description of these measurement techniques, a review of the major experimental results obtained by their application to the study of physical work, and a discussion of the use of perceived exertion data as a criterion in the assessment of manual materials handling. Keywords
