Abstract
A method has been investigated for distinguishing between inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bonding in hydroxy-carbonyl compounds with the aid of infra-red measurements. It is based on the fact that compounds containing intermolecular hydrogen bonds exhibit considerably higher carbonyl frequencies in dioxan solution than in the pure state and that compounds capable of intramolecular hydrogen bonding show only small differences. This method has been applied to pannaric acid, giving support for the structure previously proposed. The infra-red results were also confirmed by ultraviolet absorption data. Keywords
