Abstract
The relationship between acute dilatation of the stomach and duodenal obstruction by compression of the duodenum by the root of the mesentery has been recognized in late years and considerable literature has been devoted to the discussion of this condition. However, the clinical and pathologic manifestations of chronic obstruction of the duodenum have received but little attention. During the last year several cases in which the symptoms and physical findings were more or less constant, and dilatation of the duodenum was revealed by roentgen-ray and fluoroscopic examination, have been studied in the Cleveland Clinic. As a result of this experience we have found that a careful inspection of the duodenum by the surgeon and a critical examination of the roentgenogram in certain obscure cases has led to a more frequent recognition of this condition, with the resultant alleviation of the symptoms by surgical intervention.
