Chronic ulcerative colitis complicated by colonic lymphoma

Abstract
The prognosis of carcinoma with ulcerative colitis is very poor. Slaney and Brooke reported only 4.2% 5 yr survivors. Perry et al. reported 22 cases of primary malignant lymphoma of the rectum in 1972; 75% of these patients were dead within 2 yr of the diagnosis. In the few cases of lymphoma with ulcerative colitis reported in the available literature, it appears that the prognosis for long survival is also poor. The number of cases reported was insufficient to justify any dogmatic statements in this regard. The prognosis is influenced by involvement of regional nodes and adjacent structures. Radical surgical excision should be done for localized lymphoma associated with ulcerative colitis when no other diffuse area of spread is demonstrable. The patient who is the subject of this report has no further evidence of Hodgkin''s disease at time of publication.
