Abstract
In the clinical literature the consept of self-injurious behaviour continues to be based upon inferred motivational states. In this article it is stated that such an approach hinders the successful modification of such behaviours. An analysis of self-injurious behaviour of the mentally retarded in terms of its controlling discriminative and reinforcing stimuli is presented. Empirical evidence is discussed in order to assess the analysis with respect to its adequacy.
