Abstract
The 1970’s saw the birth of therapeutic endoscopic electrocoagulation in the gastrointestinal tract. This new technology was preceded by the development of flexible fiberoptic endoscopes able to visualize the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. With the introduction of monopolar electrodes to assist the colonoscopist in achieving hemostasis after electrosurgical polypectomy, an era of ten years has been spent in experimental evaluation of electrocoagulation in the control of gastrointestinal bleeding.
