Open‐ and closed‐mindedness and assimilation and contrast effects

Abstract
This study tests the hypotheses that Closed‐Minded persons will assimilate belief‐discrepant communications from highly credible sources more than Open‐Minded persons, and that Closed‐Minded persons will contrast belief‐congruent communications from low‐credible sources more than Open‐Minded persons. Neither hypothesis was supported, but consistency theory seems to account for some of the changes which did occur.
