Abstract
To the Editor: In his editorial in the October 20 issue Hobbins notes that although chorionic biopsy during the first trimester may be a "logistically attractive alternative" to second-trimester ultrasound for the determination of fetal sex, the 12 per cent fetal-loss rate raises questions about the safety of the biopsy procedure.1 In fact, the loss rate by itself can neither raise nor settle questions about chorionic biopsies: it must be viewed in relation to the "spontaneous" loss rate among unselected and untested pregnancies at the time that the biopsies are done (8 to 12 weeks of gestation).Current data suggest . . .
