Abstract
In at least some cases of the battered child syndrome, there appears to be an etiologic component of abnormal separation of mother from child arising from prolonged hospitalization of the infant for treatment of prematurity. The implications for the hospital are clear: while the infant's problems are being treated, ways must be found to establish the early contact required for normal mothering behavior to develop. Keywords
