Abstract
In the first part of his discussion, the author reviews the epidemiologic method and includes a Summary of the pathology of atherosclerosis and its complications; an analysis of epidemiologic data on atherosclerotic coronary heart disease in economically less developed countries vs. the United States, and in 22 countries throughout the world; an analysis of trends during World War II and in the United States during the twentieth century; a discussion of the possible role of diet and other factors in accounting for observed epidemiologic patterns.
