Abstract
To the Editor: Our attention has been called to the article by C. G. Moertel et al. in the April 13 issue of the Journal. Although the authors fail to achieve their objective of "comparing... the therapeutic effectiveness of marketed analgesics" they nevertheless impugn the "therapeutic credentials" of propoxyphene (Darvon), a widely used and effective analgesic. Both the single-dose technic used and the method of data analysis employed seem poorly suited to a practical comparison of analgesics.Modell and Houde1 have discussed factors influencing the clinical evaluation of analgesic agents.
