The Significance of Large pH Fluctuations Observed in Some South African Vleis

Abstract
In certain soft water vleis (small lakes) which contain large masses of plants, diurnal fluctuations of up to 3 pH units can be observed. This can only take place if altera-tions in the C02/bicarbonate buffer occur. The results of the removal of various ions on the pH is discussed. It is concluded that plants which can grow in vleis whose pH fluctuates between pH9 and 12, can utilise both carbon dioxide and bicar-bonates for photosynthesis.
