Abstract
For years, the conflict within the socialist system has been between two monolithic forces: state and society. Things are now more complicated, owing to the fact that the two formerly monolithic forces have openly split. The scope and extent of this process vary from country to country in Eastern Europe, depending on the previous organization of state and society, and on the seriousness of the collision of interests, which is linked to the intensity of the crisis and the kind of reforms implemented from above. Generally speaking, however, the trend is the same everywhere: from polarization to conflict; from universal values (with society struggling against the state for its own sphere of influence) to a differentiation of interests within society itself. Keywords
